− | '''''Protoceratops''''' ("First Horned Face") herbivorous ceratopsian dinosaur, from the Upper Cretaceous Period (Campanian stage) of what is now Mongolia, about 80-70 million years ago. It was a member of the Protoceratopsidae, a group of early horned dinosaurs. Unlike later ceratopsians, however, it lacked well-developed horns and retained some primitive traits not seen in later genera. When fully grown this dinosaur probably weighed almost 400 pounds (180 kg). It had a large bony neck frill at the back of its heavy head and had powerful parrot-like beaked jaws. It had a large bump on its snout that may have been used in fights between rival males.[[File:Protoceratops-Green1.jpg|thumb|282px]] |
